The most important principle here is the unique selling proposition. This is the elevator pitch for your coaching business. If you don’t know what your USP is, you’re probably selling a commodity.
Most businesses struggle with defining their USP. It’s the difference between success and failure. Without a clear and concise definition of what makes your coaching business unique, all your efforts to market yourself as a coach will be crippled.
To help you define your USP, I am going to give you a list of questions you should ask yourself. These are questions you should ask yourself over and over until you come up with an answer that satisfies you. Then, write that answer down.
- What is the most important quality or characteristic about my coaching that makes it different from other types of coaching?
- What is it that people get from working with me that they don’t get from other types of consulting or training?
- How could I better describe myself and my services so people know exactly what they are getting when they hire me?
- What benefits can my clients expect to receive from working with me that they cannot receive from working with any other coach?
- What is the one thing (quality, skill, or characteristic) about me that people like most?
- What is the single biggest difference between my consulting and other types of consulting?
In this situation, you’re not trying to sell a person on hiring you. You’re trying to convince them not to hire someone else. In all these questions, you should be looking for the one word that represents the core of your unique selling proposition. This is the word or words that will serve as your “elevator pitch” to describe what people get from working with you.
Write Down Every Question You Need to Answer While serving your clients
You need to answer these questions while you’re actively coaching your clients. If you wait until you’re finished with your coaching program, the answers may have changed.
Here are some examples of questions you could ask yourself:
When I first meet a new client, how do I describe my services?
- What do I say to someone who asks me how I can help them?
- What do I say to someone who asks me what their biggest challenge is?
- How could I better explain what I do?
- What do I say to someone who says they need to change something in their life?
- What do I say to someone who says I want to start a business?

Besides the actual answers, think about how you could answer these questions more effectively. Practice on your phone and practice video recording yourself saying the answers. Do this for at least one month and note the results. If you don’t like what you’re hearing, ask yourself why. Then, ask yourself if you’re saying the right things.
Leverage your experience
When you’re working with a client, take the time to observe their body language, tone of voice, and overall demeanor. Ask questions and listen for answers, all while noting what you notice. From there, figure out how you can use your experience to help them succeed.
And then make sure you do what you say you will do. When working with people, I use my experience to show them how they can benefit from it. I am able to leverage my experience because I have the same challenges I had to overcome in order to become successful.
People are attracted to the fact that I was in the exact same position as them. If you have years of experience as a coach, you can leverage this knowledge to help people.
In the end, your experience is your best selling point, and people like this more than anything else.
